How to store vinyl records
Records warp from heat and weight, not age. Sleeves protect them from scuffs and ring wear. Get those two things right and your collection will outlive you.
Always vertical, never stacked
Records stacked flat will warp under their own weight within months. Store them upright, like books.
Pack them snug but not crushed — you should be able to pull a record out without forcing it.
Inner and outer sleeves
Replace paper inner sleeves with anti-static rice paper or poly-lined sleeves. The cheap paper ones scratch records every time you slide them in or out.
Outer sleeves (polyethylene or polypropylene) stop ring wear on the jacket — essential for anything you care about resale-wise.
Temperature and humidity
Aim for 18–22°C and 40–50% humidity. Lofts, garages, and direct sunlight will warp records fast.
Avoid exterior walls in damp climates — mould on cardboard sleeves spreads quickly.
Shelving
Kallax-style cube shelving is the standard for a reason: deep enough for 12 inches, stiff enough not to bow, and you can add more.
Don't overfill a row. Leaving 5–10% breathing room makes flipping through them enjoyable instead of a workout.
