Hard Wax

If techno had a head office, it would be on the second floor in Kreuzberg.

Kreuzberg · Paul-Lincke-Ufer 44A, 10999 Berlin
Techno · Dub · Electro · Experimental

Berlin's record stores aren't just retail — they're the editorial backbone of dance music. Hard Wax has been quietly shaping what the world plays at 2am for thirty years.

Why Hard Wax

Walk up to the second floor courtyard space, past the Basic Channel ghosts. The selection is brutal, opinionated, and almost entirely 12-inches. Nothing here is filler.

If a record is in the Hard Wax racks, someone serious thought it belonged there. That single fact has launched more careers than any label.

What to dig for

Dub-techno, Berlin minimal, UK bass and reissues of Jamaican dub. The store's house labels — Basic Channel, Chain Reaction, Rhythm & Sound — are the seed of half the records people still play.

Ask. The staff don't perform warmth, but they know what's good. A specific question gets a specific record.

After Hard Wax

OYE Records (Friedrichshain and Mitte) covers disco, jazz and broken beat with the same level of curation. Bikini Waxx for the weird; Spacehall for sheer volume; Sound Metaphors for collectors. The Neukölln strip rewards an aimless afternoon.
