THE 29 RECORD SHOPS
Helsinki keeps a much bigger scene than the map suggests.
Helsinki's record scene runs through Kallio and Kamppi — Levykauppa Äx, Digelius, Black & White, Beat Bakery. For a city of 650,000 the depth is striking, especially on Finnish jazz, prog, and library music that presses well and rarely leaves the country.
Digelius has been running since 1971 with the country's deepest jazz and world catalogue. Kaiku and Ääniwalli handle the night listening. Add the summer festival calendar and Helsinki punches well above its size for a European weekend dig.
THE FIVE ROOMS
Since 1971. The country's essential jazz, world and folk counter — an archive as much as a shop.
The Finnish chain's flagship — new releases, rock, metal, indie. The city's default first stop.
Second-hand generalist — Finnish prog, rock, jazz, soul. Deep bins, fair prices.
Curated indie, dance, ambient — the tastemaker counter in the city's most-loved neighbourhood.
Small, sharp, resident-DJ shop — house, techno, disco, Finnish underground pressings.
